In ancient Greek the word aggelos denotes a messenger or delegate, specifically one who delivers messages on behalf of the Gods. In ancient Greek mythology Hermes is the archetypal emissary of the Gods. The origin of the word angel in English is derived from the ancient Greek word aggelos.
